1. Dua hari sebelum Deepavali, saya mendapat beberapa SMS dan panggilan kecemasan dari Kak Long "... Kau tolong jengah-jengahkan Maya Karin... Katanya ada mesyuarat tatatertib berkaitan dia. Mungkin dia akan disuruh letak jawatan. .... Ansuran rumah dan keretanya dah dua bulan tak bayar... katanya dah tak tertahan dugaan ...... Kak long dah kirim RM1,XXX! ......"
5. Saya bantulah dia memurni surat rayuan dan memberi idea2 menyediakan alasan kukuh seperti mangsa dera (kerana ada laporan polis dan kesihatan), baru bercerai pada tahun berkenaan, ibu tunggal anak 8 sepertimana dalam deraf, sediakan laporan kauselor atau pakar psikologi jika trauma, etc etc etc...
6. Tiba-tiba anak sulongnya membawa seorang anak kecil berpamper yang dikatakannya anaknya. Kepelikan saya bertanya "Eh pelik ni, dalam surat kata anak bungsu berumur empat tahun. Tapi budak kecik lagi! Tak mungkin 4 tahun." Muka Maya Karin berubah tapi cepat menjawab "Anak ramai Angah sampai lupa umur." Saya percaya ajelah.
7. Sebelum balik saya serahkan "zakat deepavali" kepadanya dan anak sulungnya. Taklah sebanyak zakat deepavali kak long saya. Kesian ibu tunggal anak lapan baru dibuang kerja.
8. Sewaktu perjalanan pulang saya bertanya anak "Kakak perasan tak muka makcik berubah bila ayah tanya pasal budak yang berpamper?" Anak saya kata "Ya. Pelik. Budak tu masih kecil dan makcik berpisah April 2008!" Pelik memang pelik.
9. Esoknya saya terima panggilan dari seorang sepupu rapat lagi. "Dah pergi ke rumah Maya Karin?"
"Ya."
"Dia seorang dengan anak-anak?"
"Ya."
"Dia seorang dengan anak-anak? Ada orang lain?" Diulang-ulangnya.
"Tak ada." Saya menjawab berulang.
"Ada apa-apa yang pelik?"
"Ada budak perempuan kecil berumur ~ 1-2 tahun masih berpamper. Katanya anaknya. Tapi dalam surat kata anak bungsu berumur 4 tahun. Tu yang agak pelik sikit kerana di berpisah April 2008."
"Since kau dah nampak biarlah kak story cerita sebenar....Bla bla bla.... " Terkejut beruk saya.
10. Saya segera SMS Maya Karin menyatakan kemusykilan saya tentang anak kecil itu. Selepas berdalih-dalih dia mengaku telah kahwin lain. Bengkak betul saya!
Kami fahamlah dia anak tunggal yatim piatu. Kami pun anak yatim piatu. Apa nak sorok-sorok pasal nikah? Bukan bila kesempitan wang aja baru nak cari saudara mara!!
11. Nampaknya iini kali kedua Maya Karin buat hal. Nikah dan beranak pinak tak beritahu kami.

1. Teringat sebuah pantun: biri-biri, tenuk rusa; orang memberi, kita merasa! MSG serbuk perasa.
2. Dunia ni pelik. Pakej perdana haji dah boleh disponsor penerima tender. Zakat (fitrah?) Deepavali pun ada juga! MasyaAllah. Ammmmmmmaaaaaaa!

Anwar puts his foot down
ANALYSIS By JOCELINE TAN
joceline@thestar.com.my
The de facto PKR leader’s hand in the party polls has been evident in the last few days as he turned on his charm as well as used a heavy fist to fine-tune the list of candidates.
PKR politician Datuk Zaid Ibrahim has always had this polished and casual chic kind of look. But the past few days have found him looking harassed and rather out of sorts, as though the world is slowly crumbling around his ears.
He cannot be blamed because he was almost “played out” by three ladies in a private home in Taman Tun Dr Ismail on Thursday.
During the meeting, the three ladies managed to elicit three promises from him: one, he would not contest the PKR No. 1 post; two, he would pull out from the No. 2 post; three, he would instead go for a vice-president post.
The three ladies were none other than PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, her daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar and political secretary to the Selangor Mentri Besar, Faekah Husin, whose petite frame belies her political cables in the party.
Zaid agreed to the proposals because he was told that Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim would also quit the race and that Wan Azizah would persuade the other candidate Mustaffa Kamil Ayob to withdraw.
The idea was to pave the way for a face-off between Nurul Izzah and Azmin Ali. Both mother and daughter have very personal feelings about Azmin and they evidently felt that this would be the moment to take him on.
On Friday, Zaid and Nurul Izzah met again to discuss a joint press conference on Saturday where he would withdraw and she would confirm her candidacy. His only condition was that she should not quit midway.
But the press conference never took place, the three women went incommunicado, calls were not returned and SMSes went unanswered.
Zaid must have felt as if he was in one of those weird twilight zone movies – did the meeting actually take place or had he imagined all of it?
Well, it was definitely for real and when things went all silent on the other side, he dashed off e-mails to all those who had attended, confirming the discussion. Only Nurul Izzah acknowledged the e-mail.
Zaid was totally cheesed off and has since confirmed he is in the race against Azmin and Mustaffa. Khalid is staying out whereas Nurul is going for the vice-president post.
Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim apparently blew his top and put his foot down on the deal, despite the fact that his wife is his party president and his daughter is an MP in her own right.
Anwar, weighed down as he is by the sodomy trial, has been working behind the scenes to prevent the party elections from getting out of hand.
He is convinced an early general election is in store after Friday’s Budget and he cannot afford any big splits. The party adviser turned on his legendary charm for some, and used a heavy fist on others to avert all-out fights.
Khalid evidently bowed to Anwar’s determination that Azmin should be the next deputy president.
At a private meeting last week, Anwar asked Khalid to concentrate on his duties as Selangor Mentri Besar.
He told Khalid that going for No. 2 did not make sense given that he has to focus on defending Selangor in the next election. He reminded Khalid that it was why he was replaced by Azmin as Selangor PKR chief a few months ago.
The contest for the PKR No. 2 post has had more twists and turns than the East-West Highway. There has also been collateral damage and a PKR-aligned news portal had to publish a long editorial insisting that, “We are nobody’s poodle,” following accusations that its coverage of the PKR polls was one-sided.
The real power lies with Anwar. He let things take its course earlier on but began pressing the control buttons in the days leading to the confirmation of candidates.
He would probably step up his role again when the divisions convene to vote for the supreme council between Oct 29 and Nov 21.
Those who had pressured him to go for No. 1 must be slapping themselves. Why should he, when he has such unlimited and undefined power as the de facto leader?
At the same time, his word is not what it used to be with the new one-man-one-vote system of election.
For instance, Zaid, who defied Anwar so openly, still managed to secure some 40 nominations for the No. 2 post and more than qualified for the No. 1 post.
Rafizi Ramli, Anwar’s calon wahyu for the leadership of Angkatan Muda Keadilan or AMK, did poorly in the nominations race and has pulled out, reportedly on Anwar’s advice.
The AMK fight is now between two street-fighter style politicians – Badrul Hisham Shaharin and incumbent Shamsul Iskander Akin. Although Shamsul has been unremarkable as AMK chief, Anwar is said to prefer him over Badrul who has an independent spirit.
Anwar’s alignment to personalities in the party seems to suggest that this election has more to do with his sodomy trial than the future of the party.
His all-time favourite Azmin is primed to look after Anwar’s personal interest as keenly as he does that of the party. Even Anwar’s approval of Shamsul and Tian Chua is related to their ability to whip up demonstrations which will be useful in his trial.
As for Wan Azizah, who was returned unopposed as president, her loyalty to the party is second only to her loyalty to her husband.
Those contesting the party polls have to realise that they are there not only to take on the Barisan Nasional but also to rise to Anwar’s defence in the sodomy trial.

Over 13,000 embraced Islam in Dubai
Ahmed Shaaban
3 September 2010
The emirate of Dubai is seeing waves of conversion to Islam over the last 14 years, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan, according to a top official.
Huda Al Kaabi, head of the New Muslims Section at the Islamic Affairs Department, said as many as 13,946 people, from 72 nationalities, have embraced Islam in Dubai over the period from 1996 to 2010. “These include 10,450 new Muslims from 2005 to 2009.”
People are touched by the merciful instructions of Islam which strictly orders its followers to be honest, fair and kind to all people, disregarding their religion, race, language and colour. “When people come to Dubai, they know better about the bright image of Islam, and how it tolerantly meets man’s needs in all places and times,” Kaabi said.
Prof Dr Lewis, one of the new Muslims, said his two PhDs in philosophy and education helped him evaluate Islam reasonably. “I am not convinced to do so because of a passionate idea or imitation, but due to my total heart and mind contentedness.”
John, another convert from the Philippines, said he managed to get information about the rituals, virtues and ways of Islam from his colleagues. “Islam truly respects the mind and heart of human beings,” he said.
Shanju Kamarachi, an Indian working in a bank, was a Hindu before he came to discuss issues with Dr Zakir Naik — at a Ramadan Forum lecture — about paradise which only Muslims will enter as is known in India. “I got clear answers, particularly about the virtues of Islam which calls for one God, morals and what is best for human beings,” he said.
After spending 13 years as a missionary, Rowena said “having seen no Muslim converting to another religion made me ask and read about Islam and finally embrace it.”
While 3,043 people converted to Islam in 2009, the first half of 2010 saw 1,373 new Muslims; most of them were from the Philippines, Russia, China and India. “The nationality of most new Muslims differs from one year to another, however,” Kaabi said. More women than men opt for Islam.
“This year among the converts, 1,098 are women and 275, men. Likewise, 984 of the 1,365 new Muslims in the first half of 2009 were women, and 576 of the 878 people who embraced Islam in the first six months of 2008 were women,” she said.
There are more conversions during Ramadan. The varied activities held therein — including introductory lectures, courses and workshops on Islam, along with mass Iftars, charity meals and contests — attract more people to Islam. “Some 391 people from 35 nationalities converted to Islam last Ramadan.”
The Ninth Ramadan Forum witnessed the conversion of 160 people, mostly Filipinas this year while 205 people converted to Islam at Dar Al Ber Society in June and July this year.
Kaabi said the New Muslims Section provides fully-integrated and free services to Muslims, new Muslims, and non-Muslims.
“Special programmes are held for non-Muslims to integrate them into the UAE society and enlighten them about the religion and culture while new Muslims join courses on the Holy Quran and Sunnah, as well as the pillars, rituals, teachings and ethics of Islam.”
In a bid to answer all queries and doubts about Islam, a new online service Itasel Bena or Call Us is available on the website www.iacad.gov.ae. “Most of the questions received are about polygamy, circumcision and the burial norms in Islam,” Kaabi said.
Questions may also be submitted in person or by telephone on 04-6087707. “The seven male and female staff counsellors are geared up round the clock to answer all questions in various languages, including Tagalog, Chinese, Russian, English, Urdu and Malayalam.”
Kaabi said regular visits are paid to the consulates, departments, hospitals, shopping centres and prisons to explain the teachings of Islam, using creative, scientific and persuasive techniques.
